Bansuri

Origin: India

Keys: Various available, ranging from D4 to C5 (represents the lowest note on each flute)

Range: 2 octaves plus a major 2nd

Dizi

Origin: China

 

Keys: Various available, ranging from D4 to D5 (represents the lowest note on each flute)

Range: 2 octaves plus a major 2nd

Additional Info: Dizis traditionally have a “buzzy” timbre, but can also be set up to play with a smoother sound.

Bawu

Origin: China

 

Keys: F (D E F G A C D) and G (E F# G A B D E)

Range: 1 octave

Additional Info: The bawu is not actually a flute. It’s a free reed instrument, like a harmonica or accordion. It has a small range, but an exotic sound and is capable of smooth portamento.

Tin Whistle

Origin: British Isles

 

Keys: Various available, ranging from D4 to G5 (represents the lowest note on each flute).

Range: 2 octaves plus a major 2nd

Suling

Origin: South East Asia

 

Keys: F# Pelog (F#, G, A, C#, D) and B Pelog (B, C, D, F#, G)

Range: 2 octaves

Native American Flute

Origin: North America

 

Keys: Various available.

Range: 1 octaves plus a minor 3rd

Additional Info: Native American flutes are commonly used to play melodies based around the minor pentatonic scale. Notes outside of this scale are possible with some limitations.

Silver Flute

Origin: Europe

 

Key: Chromatic Range: 3 octaves plus a major 2nd (C4-D7)

Additional Info: “Silver flute” is the name I use for the Western concert flute. It’s the name commonly used in Irish traditional music circles.

Recorder

Origin: Europe

Keys: Each recorder is capable of a chromatic scale in the following ranges: Tenor (C4-C6), Alto (F4-F6), Soprano (C5-C7), Sopranino (F5-F7).

Range: 2 octaves
